We've all heard the phrase "count your blessings," but it's easy to get caught up in the hustle and bustle of life that we forget to actually do it.
Gratitude is an incredibly important part of life. It's not just a nice thing to do, or a way to make yourself feel better—gratitude actually affects your attitude and how you behave towards other people.
The first step in creating a gratitude list is to understand your emotional estate now.
Ask yourself, "What is my emotional state, right now!". This will help move form the daily grind to a heightened state of awareness.
Next, notice what is inspiring you-step 2. This helps you realize that daily experiences can enhance our state of being and are beyond what we are thinking. Life is about what we see, hear, touch, taste, and experience. It is not just about the internal dialog.
Writing down, what inspires you helps ground you in the day. Write in detail about why it inspired you. Be as descriptive as possible.
The 3 step in creating a gratitude list is to write about what you looked forward to throughout the day. Looking forward to something is often just as important as actually doing it, especially if you're really excited about whatever it is. So think back to the moments throughout your day that made you feel good, and write them down. Maybe it was when you got home from work and saw your dog resting on his bed, or maybe it was when your boss told you how much she appreciated your work. Whatever it was, pay attention to those moments and write them down!
Now answer the question, how did you connect with loved ones? - Step 4
This step is all about reflecting on the people in your life who bring you joy, and the ways that you connect with them. Think about how often you see them, how often you talk to them on the phone, or even how much time you spend thinking about them. Write down some of those things in your journal!
The 5th step in creating a gratitude list is to write down what you are grateful for. This can be anything: your family, your job, your home—even the weather!
It's important to be specific. If you're writing about your job, be sure to mention specific things that make it great. If you're writing about your family members, mention the things they've done for you lately that made you happy. And if you're writing about the weather, be sure to describe how it affected your day and how it made things better or worse for you.
The most important step in creating a gratitude list is to write down what you can do tomorrow to better yourself. If you're feeling drained or overwhelmed, it's easy to get caught up in the stress and forget about the positive things that are happening in your life.
But when we take the time to reflect on these positive experiences and remember why we're so grateful for them, we can feel happier and more fulfilled.
So take a moment today and write down one thing you want to do tomorrow that will help you feel better about yourself or your life. Then commit to doing it!
