5 Causes of Mental Burnout in Business Professionals

1. How a Strength Can be a Weakness. We are accustomed to thinking of strengths as something that is good and weaknesses as something that is bad. And while this is true, it is also true that strengths can sometimes become our downfall. In other words, we can take a strength too far or use it in situations where it isn’t applicable. Thus, the way we can tell whether our strength has become a weakness is by asking ourselves if there are times when using it causes us problems.

2. Over-Extending Yourself. If you have the ability to do ten different things, then you will likely feel obligated to do all ten of those things because you are capable of doing them. However, just because you can do more than one thing doesn’t mean you should do more than one thing. It’s important to make sure that we are not over-extending ourselves in our careers as well as in our personal lives and taking on more responsibilities than we need to or even want to.

3. Too Much of the Same Thing. When we spend most of our time doing the same thing, no matter how much we love that thing, we tend to become burned outHaving a distorted view of yourself. If you think that you can be all things to all people, you’re setting yourself up for failure — as well as stress and burnout.

4. Trying to control everything around you. Some people can’t stand uncertainty and ambiguity; they always need to know what lies ahead. But no one can anticipate every possible outcome in life or control how others will behave in any given situation. Realizing this will help ease some of the stress you feel when things don’t go as expected.

5. Focusing only on others, not on yourself. Some people believe that taking care of themselves is selfish, but if you don’t take care of your own needs, you won’t be able to take care of anyone else’s needs.

Quit trying to overthink this. It is a simple solution and it starts with you.

First, find balance through self-awareness. Second, make small changes. Third, is to celebrate success by measuring your results.
